About Holy Hill Church

The history of the pilgrimage place on Svaty Kopecek begins in the 17th century, during the Thirty Years War in Europe. Jan Andrysek, a wine dealer, promised that when he got rich he would build a church for the Virgin Mary. He forgot this, but the Virgin Mary appeared to him in his dreams. One day he was in a snowstorm that stopped just as he got on a hill. It was the place from his dream and he remembered his promise. He marked this place and went home, where he found that the owners of this place were premonsterates, a church order of monks. On 13th March 1629, the Olomouc bishop consistory gave him approval to build a chapel. This chapel was finished four years later and on 3rd April 1633 it was consecrated. The stone relief of the Virgin Mary with Child at the altar had been completed one year before.

In 1642, the Swedes came to Olomouc and plundered the city for eight years. In 1645, a Swedish soldier set the chapel on fire. Only the walls were left after the fire. The relief of the Virgin Mary was initially lost, but soon the chapel was rebuilt and the relief of the Virgin Mary was returned.

The Cathedral of the Visitation of Our Lady Mary/Chram Navstiveni Panny Marie is the cathedral visible on the hillside to the east of Olomouc on a clear day.

The impressive Baroque cathedral rests on the side of the 421m elevation "Holy Hill" above the village of Samotisky, 11 km from Olomouc. It has since become the most famous pilgrimage church in the Czech lands and was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II on April 11th, 1995.

The Baroque interior is not as majestic as that of St Michael's in Olomouc, but it's impressive nonetheless. The best feature of Holy Hill Church is its hillside setting, with fine views over Olomouc and the Hana plain. On a clear day, the tower of the Chateau at Tovacov is visible 40km away.
