About St. Moritz Church

...The parish church of St. Moritz ranks among the rarest structures from the late Gothic in Moravia. Similar to St. Wenceslas Cathedral and its adjoining area, the Olomouc columns and fountains, it has been declared a national cultural monument. Today's church stands on the site of an older holy sanctuary the look of which is unfortunately unknown. The oldest reference to the old church in archival sources dates back to the year 1257.

The beginnings of the construction of the new church are dated to the year 1412. The reason for its construction was apparently the work of a destructive fire in the town in the year 1398 and the attempt to build a bigger parish church for this royal town. The oldest parts of the church are located in the western part. Thanks to the lack of homogeneity of the western façade-the different look of the two towers-it is assumed that the southern tower perhaps belonged to the original older church. The date of beginning on the construction, 1412, is declared on an inscription in the northern tower. The church with its length of 54 meters does not have a rival in Central or Northern Moravia.

At the beginning of the 16th century a part of the three-aisled arches around the southern tower was destroyed when the bell tower collapsed and had to be replaced by a new structure. After the year 1500 new circular arches and a western portal were added to the western side of the church. A particularly fascinating element in terms of architecture is the western double spiral staircase. At the beginning of the 16th century the interior of the church was significantly enriched by an extensive wall painting dating back to the year 1505 (today unfortunately for the most part hidden behind the Baroque altar). The Gothic stage of the church was definitively completed by repainting in the year 1540.

After the calamities which struck the town in the 17th century (first an enormous fire in the year 1709 and later the Thirty Years War and occupation of the town by the Swedes from the years 1642-1650) the church was reconstructed and the interior was refurnished. In addition to new roofing, a Loretto chapel was built on the northern side of the three-aisled nave (1725-1727) and and two new crypts were constructed. In the year 1854 a new main altar was purchased after a plan by the Viennese architect Karl Rössner. The extensive regothicising of the interior and exterior of the church was carried out in the years 1874-1908 for the most part by the Olomouc master-builder Franz Kottas and the stonemason Ernst Melnitzký-also from Olomouc.
